Booking & Referral Information

Shaun Watson has specific expertise in management of dizziness, vertigo and balance disorders.  Given the very long waiting time that had developed, the referral and booking system was changed some years ago and now he only sees patients in consultation with these problems or certain patients with neuromuscular/peripheral nerve problems (rare exceptions are made upon specific request).

Patients with dizziness, vertigo and balance disorders are required to have Vestibular Function Tests (VFT) prior to consultation (audiometry and MRI in some cases also).  Shaun has found that this works very well on many levels.  The patient has results available at time of consultation, making the assessment process at initial consultation more accurate and rapid.  Patients who are unstable, unwell or more complex can be triaged for early consultation by the Vestibular Nurse Specialist at time of testing.  Many patients can have a diagnosis made at time of VFT and treatment can be performed or advised, examples including BPPV, Vestibular neuritis, bilateral vestibular failure, Meniere’s disease and Vestibular migraine.

Patients with neuromuscular/peripheral nerve problems are required to have NCS/EMG prior to consultaion.  The rationale is essentially the same as for VFT, but in this case the patient is seen, at least briefly, by Shaun and he can triage the patient personally.

Please try and make it very clear whether the patient just requires a specific test or whether they require testing followed by consultation.  If the patient is complex it is sometimes preferable to fax the referral for clarity.
